CLINICAL EVALUATIONS

Clinical evaluations are made by trained research assistants.  They are performed under dermatological control.

The evaluators are constant within a study. For a small number of studies (large numbers of subjects) multiple evaluators may be required. In these cases, evaluators attend prior training sessions with the referring dermatologist using charts or photographs in order to homogenise scoring. These sessions are documented. The scoring scales used are either validated scales from the literature or scales proper to the Sponsor.

instrumental methods

The experimenters master all the classical instrumental techniques dedicated to cosmetic evaluation (Trans Epidermal Water Loss, colour measurement by chromametry, spectrochromametry or mexametry, hydration status by corneometry, pH, skin temperature, cutaneous blood flow by laser Doppler, sebum by sebumetry, sebutape and gravimetric method, microrelief by replica, skin-fold thickness by calliper).

Imaging techniques used in pharmaceutical studies are also used to document cosmetic activities, in particular optical coherence tomography (OCT), skin ultrasonography (20MHz), reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and cutaneous perfusion by laser Doppler imaging.

AUTO-QUESTIONNAIRES

Particular care is applied to the completion of auto-questionnaires.

Questionnaires are completed using tactile tablets or 2-in-1 portable computers enabling the subject to record answers directly as well as real-time monitoring of answers.
